Revisiting the “Every Game Should Have an Easy Mode” Discussion From a Different Perspective

It’s been nearly a decade since the recent “Every Game Should Have an Easy Mode” discussion started. We took a look at some of today’s most popular games and found that easy mode is more difficult than it used to be, yet still relatively easy for many players. What are your thoughts on this debate?

“Deathloop too hard” is a popular game on the Nintendo Switch. The game has an easy mode that was recently added to the game. This article discusses why easy modes are important, and how this one may have been poorly implemented.

To provide some perspective, I like playing games on hard, and I enjoy games that challenge the player in general. I’ve discovered that playing on higher difficulties may provide rewarding moments that, at least for me, cannot be obtained on lesser levels. I used to be rather outspoken against games that weren’t built for it including an easy option solely to get more people to play. Designing an easy option for a game, in my opinion, fundamentally limits the way certain creators approach game creation, and may result in some players not receiving the final result of the developer’s objective. Even if having an easy mode might seem to have no effect on my decision to play on hard, there may be design choices made under the surface that the user would never be aware of that did, in fact, influence aspects of the game. To me, the danger of such a situation was too large, and I mainly disregarded any counter-arguments.

I recently found myself debating my own ideas above for a different reason than people wanting games to be easier: I want more games to include a hard mode option. Because I adore pokemon, my frustrations come to surface. I don’t purchase the games new, and haven’t for many decades, but I do buy them secondhand to avoid supporting the corporation directly. I’m a Pokemon fanatic. I’m finding that the games are becoming ridiculously easy. Not because I’m improving, but because the games are deleting choices that the user used to generate challenge. Adding elements over which the player has no realistic control without going out of their way to make things more difficult for themselves in a tiresome manner. They seem to be deleting features that alienate me as a player for desiring more resistance from the game, and I immediately see WHY people desire easy settings in some of my favorite games. I sense a degree of estrangement in that alienation that I’m sure folks desiring simpler games do as well.

My position on the subject hasn’t necessarily changed. Maybe I should simply give up on pokemon for the rest of my life. Perhaps I’m a gigantic hypocrite, and the devs should give in to my wishes but not to the wishes of others. Maybe the games aren’t meant for people like me, and that’s OK. But I’m sure that circumstance isn’t ideal for many. This is difficult because I respect a game with a lot of possibilities, such as The Last of Us 2, which has so many options that anybody could play it, but I also love the From Software suite, which is created for a certain experience and a specific difficulty level. I was able to fine-tune TLOU2 to create just the right amount of difficulty. While I’ve played several of From’s games so many times that they’ve gotten too easy, I still like them. It would be an option for me to get more fun out of them if the alternatives to make it tougher were available. The more I think about it, the more I believe I’ve been incorrect all along, and that allowing players to customize the game to their preferences is the greatest alternative.

I’m curious as to how some of you are feeling.

Last night, I went to see a buddy who was portraying Spider-Man. At home, I beat the game, and it was a lot simpler than this. It made me…

  • The end-game is discussed.

There’s a widely held belief among MMO players that an MMO with the majority of its content hidden behind obtaining the maximum character level is faulty or has terrible game design. I’d argue, for the sake of conversation and because I believe it, that the content of an MMO can’t…
