Review – The Magnificent Trufflepigs

The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a new casual game from the developer of Candy Crush Saga. It has been released as a free-to-play title on iOS and Android, but players will have to pay for additional content.

The the magnificent trufflepigs walkthrough is a review of the game The Magnificent Trufflepigs.

The world-famous cable network AMC (yep, the Breaking Bad channel) is still looking to establish a name for itself in the gaming world. Airplane Mode, their debut game, was so strange and useless that I’m still not sure whether it was a self-aware work of pure comedy or the most ridiculous effort at a “art game” I’ve ever played. I’m glad to report that The Magnificent Trufflepigs, their second game, isn’t nearly as useless or needless as its predecessor. That isn’t to say I thought it was especially excellent, but improvement is progress, right?

It certainly is, Beth. Even if the framerate sometimes stutters.

The Magnificent Trufflepigs is what happens when you’re a huge fan of Firewatch, one of the most well-received “walking simulators” on the market, but you want to add a twist to explain its existence. It’s a logical progression from the public’s preconceived ideas about games with a lower level of interaction. This is a dialogue-driven journey in which two young people reminisce about their childhoods, life choices, previous romances, and so on.

The story isn’t great, but the excellent voice acting enhances what is, at best, a mediocre screenplay. In principle, connecting with these characters should be difficult. They don’t appear onscreen, and their speech is restricted to walkie-talkie talks and static sequences interspersed between the days of the week, which serve as chapters in The Magnificent Trufflepigs. It’s not very memorable, since it’s more of an entertaining and uplifting tale that keeps your attention on it, but hey, it works. Surprisingly, it functions better than the real “gameplay” sections in here.

Snore… snore… snore… snore… snore… snore… snore…

These gameplay elements are why the game is titled The Magnificent Trufflepigs in the first place. Have you heard of these pigs that are taught to sniff for truffles growing under the ground? You, on the other hand, do something comparable in here. Instead of searching for truffles with your nose, you use a metal detector to search for metal items. This is how you pass the time as the story develops. Unfortunately, it is as tedious as it sounds, even if the game does provide a plausible excuse for you to waste a week of your in-game life doing it.

This, I believe, is due to its sluggish pace. While your regular walking pace isn’t quite as quick as Quake’s, it’s a lot more tolerable than the near-paralytic walking speed you’ll experience while using the metal detector to scan the ground. It moves at a glacial pace that soon gets on your nerves. Ironically, particularly given the fact that you’re looking for leftovers in vast wide areas. Granted, they’re lovely wide areas with lovely vistas and a nice use of color, but they’re so sluggish that they’re borderline anxiety-inducing.

This is the most disappointing Instagram post ever.

The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a strange walking simulator that would have been a lot more fun if the creators had chosen to add LESS gaming. Even if the narrative wasn’t very compelling, I was much more engaged in it than I was in searching for diaper pins and bottles with the world’s slowest metal detector. I’m not sure who it’s intended audience is. Maybe you’re a huge, borderline rabid Firewatch fan who’d want to play a game that’s clearly influenced by it?

The Magnificent Trufflepigs is a sight for sore eyes with its beautiful sceneries and color palette, even if its framerate isn’t quite rock-solid.

The game mixes Firewatch’s fascinating “walking and chatting” with a sluggish metal detecting gameplay loop that irritated me after a few minutes.

The Magnificent Trufflepigs shines best here, in my opinion. A relaxing music complements the major protagonists’ outstanding performances.

Ironically, I believe The Magnificent Trufflepigs would have been a more enjoyable experience if the game’s irritating metal detecting gameplay loop had been removed entirely…

Final Score: 6.0
