Aeterna Noctis - Always Look At The Bright Side

REVIEW – Aeterna Noctis is an ordinary game: this was my opinion for the better part of a day. It’s more difficult to describe than attempting to decipher a monoscope’s program (there isn’t one; otherwise, it wouldn’t be a monoscope). That’s not to suggest the product is bad, but I can’t say Aeterna Noctis is especially memorable for that reason. Still, it’s worth trying between two Christmas dinners.

The temperature/perseverance of my seven-and-a-half-year-old PC is one of humanity’s mysteries.

The contrast between light and darkness

But first, let’s get to the point: this game is inspired by the Souls series and… Side-scrolling, exploration-based titles in the Metroid style (I don’t like the shorter word…) The result from Aeternum Game Studio S.L. is stylish, and not only because it doesn’t hide the fact that below the dark fantasy and anime cloak lurks Konami’s previously neglected Castlevania property. (This is also true of Silent Hill’s second installment, which was as mind-blowing in terms of psychological analysis.) The plot revolves on a never-ending battle between the Queen of Light and the King of Darkness. Both have attempted to sway the cosmic balance in their favor, but Aeterna’s creator, Chaos, has cursed them for eternity since that is how the equilibrium is maintained. As a result, the earth underneath them suffered, and the grinding and anguish are underlined in the instance of our monarch.

In Aeterna Noctis, it is the king who is at the helm (in other words, he is the protagonist). However, since the game follows a formula, our talents and capabilities will not be available beyond the opening. We will gradually get stronger (the game takes around 18-19 hours to complete, but it might take less), and the skill tree will enable us to construct a unique build, but there is a feeling of superficiality here as well. The first tier of improvements is mostly intended for battle, so you’ll have a better chance of sneaking in critical damage or increasing your attack power in general. Unfortunately, since the concept of superficiality may be extended to battle, they will be required. When a character with an axe attacks considerably quicker than we do with our sword, I consider it sluggish and, in some circumstances, not exactly angled in the player’s direction. This situation will occur often enough that it will be seen even by non-specialists. Of course, you can grow accustomed to it, but it’s the tiny things that add up to the score, rating, or whatever you want to call it after approximately 5100 characters. But if it was the only thing that was distracting to the point of being irritating, maybe a more balanced score could be given for a game that wasn’t that bad in terms of looks…

large

Frustrating, oh

Platforming is another important aspect of the look. I’m afraid I can’t shout its praises either. On the contrary, certain (?) moving difficulties are expected. That’s all right. They do, however, have larger hitboxes. That is an issue. There will often be smaller platforms separated by a significant distance, which will be evident. The platformer components aren’t quite accurate. I don’t feel like I have total control over the character in the air, and it doesn’t seem like I can land naturally at the conclusion of my leap. But let’s return to the hitbox situation. What exactly is the issue here? The items, on the other hand, seem to be more substantial than they appear. We will have limited room and/or time to respond and move correctly, according to the connotation. Because it doesn’t always succeed, we’ll die a few times as a result. And that’s pretty much it in terms of Souls style. Why? Our medicines, money, and things will be left behind if we die, and we will have no way of getting them back.

If not, we’ll be able to heal around the bonfires. Wow, FromSoftware’s legacy has come back to haunt us. Okay, in this instance, it’s a throne, which is appropriate given that we’re talking about a monarch. You can enhance your talents and teleport to other thrones your butt has previously tested on while sitting on the throne (not a toilet, mind you…), but there is a catch. Opponents will not resurface in the location you just left, but they will reappear in the nearby areas. So, yeah, the pleasures of respawning (?) will be retained this time as well, but with a minor twist.

The Commedia dell’Arte has come to an end.

Nonetheless, Aeterna Noctis receives a seven out of ten rating since the issues I just described are minor, and the game’s aesthetic style is nothing to be embarrassed of. It is, nevertheless, a game that can be described as ordinary and nothing more (and it explains why I cannot rate it an eight out of ten). Yes, it did the job, but the hand-drawn aesthetic and possibly the good boss battles will likely stick with you. You can see where the idea came from. So it’s not bad, and lovers of… well, I’ll write it down at the end, Metroidvania type, should give it a go. However, on console (PlayStation 5), it does have a tendency to crash, so keep that in mind.

Pro:

+ The artwork + The tale + It’s not too short

Against:

– Its gameplay is decent – It has a few annoying design problems – It isn’t totally stable on console
