Steam has chosen to prohibit any games that utilize cryptocurrencies or non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which are digital assets used to verify the validity and ownership of readily replicable things like pictures, video, and music. The decision was disclosed in a tweet by the Age of Rust creators, who noticed an updated list of Steam’s rules, which said that games that allow for the trading of cryptocurrencies or NFTs were not welcome. Age of Rust, an upcoming game in which players earn in-game NFTs by completing riddles, has an issue with this.

Community: We just got word that @Steam is removing *all blockchain games* from their platform, including Age of Rust, since NFTs have value. We’ve had excellent behind-the-scenes contact and have been honest with Steam. #NFT 1/4 pic.twitter.com/W4pR3Xl63q #blockchaingames

Valve has yet to explain why it is avoiding cryptocurrencies and/or NFTs, but Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has already taken advantage of the situation by declaring that he would enable these kinds of blockchain capabilities in games on the Epic Games Store.

Sweeney tweeted, “Epic Games Store will accept games that utilize blockchain technology as long as they obey the applicable laws, publish their conditions, and are age-rated by an appropriate organization.” “While Epic does not use cryptocurrency in its games, we encourage technological and financial innovation.”
