15 Best Anime For Final Fantasy Fans (And RPG Fans) –

Ever since its debut in 1987, Final Fantasy has been a household name for RPG fans. Here are some of our favorite Final Fantasy series over the years: Final Fantasy 1 – 5 Final Fantasy Tactics Final Fantasy VIII Final Fantasy X Final Fantasy IX Final Fantasy X-2 Final Fantasy X-3 Final Fantasy XI Final Fantasy XII Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Dirge of Cerberus Final Fantasy XIII Final Fantasy XIII-2 Final Fantasy XIV Final Fantasy XV Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward Final Fantasy Type-0 Final Fantasy XV: Final Fantasy XV Final Fantasy XV: Final Fantasy XV Final Fantasy XV: Final Fantasy XV Final Fantasy XV: Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy, a Japanese role-playing video game series that is one of the most well-known and respected RPG series of all time. The franchise has been going strong since 1987 and has been going through a series of video games and spin-offs. The latest one is Final Fantasy XV, which is a departure from several earlier games. If you are a fan of the series, you will know that there are a lot of RPG fanatics out there who have been waiting for several years for this.

While some RPG fans like to go all out and buy the latest and greatest games on the market, and some like to simply play through the same games that we all played as kids, others like to explore new horizons and spend time with their favorite RPG series on a different system. This article is made of 15 different choices of the best RPG games for different gamers of all ages.

Anime and video games are two of my favorite things.

It’s an age-old partnership. Most people (including myself) would argue that they complement each other wonderfully.

In reality, Crunchyroll’s study from 2017 revealed that at least 90% of the 10,000 people that took part in their poll were gamers.

That’s quite a number of gamers!

What could be more appealing to us gamers/anime lovers than programs that share elements with one of the most popular RPGs of all time?

Aside from the many Final Fantasy anime adaptations, here are some more anime you should watch if you like Final Fantasy games — or simply RPGs in general.

Ragnarok the Animation is a film about the Norse god Ragnarok.

While it has faults, Ragnarok is just too huge of a franchise for me to ignore.

After all, I confess to having a prejudice when it comes to everything Ragnarok Online, which I’m sure was a game that was a part of everyone’s youth as it was mine.

Ragnarok, like Final Fantasy, is largely reliant on RPG and fantasy aspects, which any other player would love.

Even if the anime didn’t do a very good job of conveying these ideas, it’s still a good thematic choice.

Tales Series, number 14

The Tales series, like Final Fantasy, has a long history of anime adaptations.

The Tales games are also pretty dang excellent, even if I wouldn’t necessarily rank them above most FF releases.

The ones I’ve played so far have fantastic artwork, great game design, and, most importantly, well-written storylines, characters, and mythology.

This is reflected in each of their anime adaptations, making them well worth seeing in my opinion.

13. Cautious Hero: The protagonist is powerful yet excessively cautious.

This is the first title on the list that isn’t based on a video game.

Instead, it originated from a light book, which happens to be one of my favorite genres.

As a casual light novel reader, I can attest to the fact that the LitRPG genre wonderfully fills the otaku/gamer niche, and this light book-to-anime adaptation is a fantastic illustration of that.

I mean, a funny isekai anime set in a fantasy world with gaming elements?

Who could say no to that?

12. Dendrogram Infinite

Infinite Dendrogram anime screenshot

Given their similarities, this one might be referred as as SAO’s less successful relative.

Infinite Dendrogram, on the other hand, is a must-see for Final Fantasy/RPG and anime lovers alike.

Particularly if, like me, you liked the early Final Fantasy games, which have some similarities to this program.

Infinite Dendrogram is an intriguing take on Isekai set in a fantastical virtual environment, with a tried-and-true VRMMO aspect.

As I previously said, it is similar to Sword Art Online, but with less seasons.

11. Accelerate the World

Accel World anime screenshot

Accel World, like Kono Yuusha ga Ore Tueee Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru, was adapted from a LitRPG light novel (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious).

Although it isn’t quite as conventional as that anime’s isekai.

Accel World is more closely associated with the VRMMO genre, as it features a school environment in addition to the virtual, future one.

Nonetheless, it’s a title to keep an eye on. Especially if you like Science Fiction RPGs or Science Fiction anime in general.

10. BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, So I’ll Increase My Defense to the Maximum.

All the minmaxers out there get a shoutout. This one is dedicated to you!

Or maybe not, depending on how you feel about the MC’s laid-back attitude to the game.

Maple is our primary character, and according to the series’ title, she has all of her stats assigned to Defense.

While some of you may believe she did it as a cheese strat, she did not.

Surprisingly, everything ended up working out for her in the end.

This anime focuses on the more informal aspect of internet gaming and having fun, which is ultimately what games are all about.

Is Trying to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon Wrong?

This program, also known as DanMachi (or “Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka” in Japanese), is a huge success for a variety of reasons.

However, if I had to choose one, it would be the amazing quantity of fanservice it offers.

Of course, as I already said, the so-called “spice melange of anime” isn’t the only positive aspect of this series.

It’s also a great adventure, action, and fantasy game with a romance and harem plotline thrown in for good measure.

Most importantly, the universe in which it is situated is controlled by a gamelike system reminiscent of any stat growth-based RPG ever made.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 8. Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!

KonoSuba anime screenshot

KonoSuba has to be included on this list.

After all, the adventurer/party motif that goes across the whole series is all too familiar.

Especially when we consider that many of FF’s previous games are set in a medieval high fantasy world with swords, shields, and magic.

Although I doubt the gaming characters are as bizarre and amusing as those in KonoSuba.

That is, after all, a foregone conclusion.

Sword Art Online is number seven.

SAO anime screenshot

As most of you have already guessed, SAO is also a fantastic anime to watch if you like RPGs.

Following all, it was the anime that popularized the Isekai genre after its huge popularity.

It’s also suitable for a variety of seasons.

The first reason, in my view, is that if you’re a Final Fantasy/RPG enthusiast who enjoys a decent narrative placed in a fantasy and gamelike environment, you should check it out.

Of course, it also belongs to the VRMMO genre, with the second season leaning more strongly toward science fiction.

The.hack/ Series is number six.

.hack//Sign anime screenshot

The.hack/ anime adaptations, like the majority of the titles on this list, are based on the IP’s many game releases.

The whole story takes place in The World, a VRMMORPG similar to those seen in games with millions of fictitious players.

And some of these characters have gone comatose in real life, which is where the majority of the series’ intrigue and drama arises.

Doesn’t this concept seem familiar?

Obviously, it does.

However, you’ll be shocked to discover that all of its anime adaptations were released much before SAO and other similar titles.

5. Gensou no Grimgar (Hai to Gensou)

Hai to Gensou no Grimgar anime screenshot

This is the most realistic isekai series of them all.

This GameLit-themed series isn’t one you’ll want to miss if you’ve read and enjoyed its light novel cousin.

Especially if you love the Final Fantasy series — or just RPG games in general.

Despite the anime’s high-fantasy isekai setting, the greatest part about this program, in my opinion, is that it shows us genuine people with real motives and interactions.

In my view, it’s one of the most underappreciated anime with gaming aspects.

4. Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari (The Rising of the Shield Hero) offers one of the finest depictions of RPG in anime of all the isekai games released in the last decade.

It relies heavily on its game-like features and high fantasy setting, which works well with the “Defeat the Demon Lord” theme that was popular in previous FF games.

Not only that, but the entire narrative, as well as the characters, have aged nicely.

Also fascinating to observe is the MC’s sometimes astute but practical attitude to “playing the game,” as well as the evolution of his relationships with other characters over time.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken is the third installment in the Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken series.

Imagine being able to play as a monster instead of Cloud, Tifa, Tidus, Yuna, and other characters with the same game-like growing mechanism.

It’s unique, and maybe even strange to some, yet nonetheless…

Isn’t it pretty cool?

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is a fantastic film that examines this topic.

It’s so good that it’s become one of my favorite isekai books.

While it isn’t the first series in its genre with an inhuman protagonist, it is one of, if not the finest, representations of the relatively unexplored theme to date.

2. Lord Overlord

Overlord anime screenshot

This anime follows a similar plot to Slime Datta Ken.

Only this time, the MC is a hard metal-looking skeleton guy who is so powerful that he’s even mentioned among characters capable of defeating Goku.

Not a terrible accomplishment, but I have my doubts about that claim.

Aside from our MC’s OPness, the anime mimics most high fantasy-based Final Fantasy games — particularly FFXIV Online, which in many ways resembles YGGDRASIL.

1. Horizontal Log

Log Horizon anime screenshot

If there’s one series that’s underappreciated among the many that RPG lovers will like, it’s this one.

Log Horizon is a high-fantasy isekai and GameLit-themed anime that has the most (if not all) of the characteristics that any gamer would want in an anime.

It features a strong storyline, engaging characters, and many well-executed party/guild-based battle sequences that will bring back memories of defeating the final monster of their first RPG.

Plus, Shiroe, the main character, is a smart strategist who I’ve always admired.

Anyone would be thrilled to have this gentleman at their party.

Particularly if they want to clear certain “unbeatable” boss raids.

What is your favorite Final Fantasy game of all time? If it’s either of the two seen above, then you’re in luck.
